Silky, elegant red Burgundy from an excellent biodynamic estate in standout vintage.

Savigny-lès-Beaune, Burgundy, France

Chandon de Briailles is run by Claude de Nicolay, who crafts amazingly expressive, focused pinot noir and chardonnay from her vineyards in Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, and Savigny-lès-Beaune, where the winery is based. This came from vines planted in 1956 and farmed biodynamically. It was naturally fermented with 20% whole clusters in open cement tanks, and aged in well-used old barrels to avoid overt oak flavour. The wine has a gorgeously pure nose of ripe strawberry and cherry with some stone and spice, and a great balance of acidity, smooth tannin, and fruit on the palate. A lot of red Burgundies are unsatisfying, especially given their prices, but this one really delivers.
