Herbal and citrussy dry muscat with brief skin contact from the wild western edge of Sicily.

Terre Siciliane, Italy

Nino Barraco is based on the sunny and windswept western edge of Sicily, and he specializes in dry unfortified wines rather than the Marsala wines that the are is known for. This one is made from the wildly aromatic zibibbo (muscat of Alexandria) grape, macerated on skins for three days, fermented dry with wild yeasts, and aged in stainless tanks. We've noticed that muscat often turns intriguingly herbal when grown on the scrubby islands of the Mediterranean, rather than simply grapey or floral as it often is. This wine is a great example of that, with thyme, mint, and citrus peels on the nose, a salty, lightly chewy feel on the palate, bright acid, and just a touch of wildness from the low-intervention winemaking.
