Dark, brambly, low-intervention rosé from a small biodynamic winery near the sea in southern Croatia, with red fruit, flowers, and more body and grip than most pink wine.

Pelješac, Croatia

Križ is a small winery on a peninsula in Croatia's southern Dalmatian coast, run by young Denis Bogoević. They specialize in the relatively well-known red grape plavac mali, and the rare grk, a white variety. The grapes are planted on steep slopes quite close to the sea, and are planted as low bush vines to protect them from the sun and strong winds. They work biodynamically in the vineyards, and keep it very simple in the winery. This rosé is all plavac mali, macerated on the skins for 12 hours, fermented with natural yeast and aged in stainless tanks before bottling with a very small dose of sulfur. It has brambly berry fruit, dried flowers, the barest whisper of funk, and quite a bit more richness and texture than your average rosé.
