Chinon, France

This estate is easily one of the finest in the Loire Valley's Chinon, and we drink and enjoy their wines year after year. This was one of the first wineries Nate ever visited in France, and epitomizes the sort of estate that we wanted to feature at Piquette. Bernard Baudry founded the domaine in the 1970s, and it is now in the capable hands of his son Mathieu. They focus on a range of single-vineyard wines on different terroirs, all farmed organically, and the winemaking is simple and clean, letting the character of the different sites come through. Clos Guillot is a south facing limestone slope that produces particularly elegant, long-lived wines. This aged in old oak for a year followed by nine months in concrete before bottling. It smells of wet stones, black raspberries, violets and green tobacco, and it's bright, grippy, and long in the mouth. It's still a hair on the young side, so drop this one in a decanter for a while for maximum pleasure if you want to drink it now, or just follow the open bottle over the course of a few days.
