Gluggable-but-complex cabernet franc from one of the grape's finest interpreters, with juicy blackcurrants and raspberries, violets, and tobacco, on a medium-bodied, lightly chalky palate. Summer red! (But also fall, winter, spring red)

Chinon, France

This estate is easily one of the finest in the Loire Valley's Chinon, and we drink and enjoy their wines year after year. This was one of the first wineries Nate ever visited in France, and epitomizes the sort of estate that we wanted to feature at Piquette. Bernard Baudry founded the domaine in the 1970s, and it is now in the capable hands of his son Mathieu. They focus on a range of  single-vineyard wines on different terroirs, all farmed organically, and the winemaking is simple and clean, letting the character of the different sites come through. This is their 'entry-level' red, and a screaming value for fans of this grape. It comes from a plot of vines planted in the 80's on gravel and sand. It was fermented with wild yeasts in cement, and remained in cement for about 10 months before bottling. This is archetypical young Chinon, bursting with fresh brambly berries and wild flowers, with an herby, green tobacco edge, bright acidity, and a bit of chalky tannin. It's light enough for summer and drinks well with a little chill and a plate of sausages!
