An intriguing light-ish red from this super-rare grape from an old dry-farmed vineyard high in Argentina's Uco Valley. Juicy, tobacco-tinged fruit with clove and cinnamon spice on a stony frame - so distinctive, like Jura meets Argentina!

Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

Germán Masera is making some of Argentina's most distinctive and surprising wines from high altitude vineyards, both from familiar varieties like malbec and rarer ones like this malvasía. The bequignol grape originally hails from France, but it's pretty much extinct there and a few scattered vineyards in Argentina still remain - this is definitely the only wine we've ever heard of from this variety! Masera took the grapes from this high-altitude old vineyard and allowed them to ferment naturally with whole clusters. The wine relaxed in old barrels for 8 months before bottling with a minimum of sulfur. It has zippy red fruit an lots of complex spice on the nose that reminds us a bit of trousseau, with an herbaceous edge that is a bit like cabernet franc.
