From a tiny natural-leaning winery near Zagreb in Croatia, this zweigelt is grapey, tart and earthy; it's a little bit funky and a whole lot of fun!

Moslavina, Croatia

Ivan Kosovec started his winery in 2005 in the northern continental part of Croatia, far from the better known wine regions along the coast (if any Croatian regions can be considered better known...). He is best known for reviving the skrlet grape, a hyper-local white variety, but he also makes some interesting red like this. He farms organically (not certified) nd uses an absolute minimum of treatments in the vines. The winemaking is minimalist, using wild yeasts and no additions other than a small dose of sulfur. This wine is all zweigelt, made in stainless, bottled relatively young and fresh. It smells like purple grapes, cherries and and flowers, with a little bit of leathery barnyard action, and plenty of bright acidity on the juicy palate.
