Ultra-savoury traditional method sparkling riesling, aged on the lees for over 30 years.  Unique, fascinating, and delicious, with tobacco, citrus peel, celery seed, and herbal tea.

Saar (Mosel), Germany

Over the last decade Florian Lauer has become one of the most exciting and respected winemakers in all of Germany. He makes fascinatingly distinct rieslings from a number of tiny parcels in the historic Ayler Kupp vineyard in Germany's cool Saar valley, mostly in dry-tasting styles. He has also become well known for his late-release sekt; sparkling wines that his father stashed away years ago for extended aging on lees. We've had the opportunity to drink more than our fair share of these fascinating old sparkling wines over the years, and they are unlike anything else we've tasted. This one was made in 1984 using the champagne method, and aged on its lees in bottle in a cold cellar for well over thirty years, before it was disgorged in 2019. Bottles of this wine that we've opened can be challenging in some ways - the flavours are deeply savoury rather than fruity - but always memorable. Expect wet tobacco, dark caramel, green tea, celery seed, and a fuzzy memory of citrus and green apple. A unique opportunity to try really old sparkling!
