A barely off-dry tightrope walker of a riesling from Florian Lauer, perfectly balanced with fruit and flowers galore.

Saar (Mosel), Germany

Over the last decade Florian Lauer has become one of the most exciting and respected winemakers in all of Germany. He makes fascinatingly distinct rieslings from a number of tiny parcels in the historic Ayler Kupp vineyard in Germany's cool Saar valley, mostly in dry-tasting styles. Each vintage he ferments the juice from a particular parcel in the same cask; this wine is nicknamed 'Senior' because it was the cask Florian's grandfather usually chose to drink at his own dinner table! It comes from a parcel of 70-year-old, mostly ungrafted wines in a cooler part of the Ayler Kupp. The wine fermented in old wood with natural yeasts, and as usual it finished naturally with just a bit too much sugar to be labelled legally dry, but not so much that it tastes sweet when balanced by the intense Saar acidity. This wine is one of our favourites from Lauer year after year, but goshdarn is it good in 2019! So many different kinds of fruit - tart citrus and green apple, peach, tropical pineapple - along with smoky earth, blooming white flowers, and spice. Pairs well with a goofy grin.
