Chinon, France

This estate is easily one of the finest in the Loire Valley's Chinon, and we drink and enjoy their wines year after year. This was one of the first wineries Nate ever visited in France, and epitomizes the sort of estate that we wanted to feature at Piquette. Bernard Baudry founded the domaine in the 1970s, and it is now in the capable hands of his son Mathieu. They focus on a range of  single-vineyard wines on different terroirs, all farmed organically, and the winemaking is simple and clean, letting the character of the different sites come through. While most of their production is red, they make a tiny bit of white and this excellent cabernet franc rosé. Half of the grapes come fro gravelly soils, and the rest from clay and silex, and the grapes are direct pressed and allowed to ferment naturally with no sulphur until bottling. It has tart wild wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, some gentle green herbs, and a nice bit of stoniness, with a dry, tangy palate. This would drink beautifully in the sunshine right now, but could hold up nicely on a cool fall night. You can definitely keep this one for a few years too, if you're into that sort of thing (we are!).
