This is a fleshy, textured white from Istrian malvazija, with green fig, ripe lemon, toasted almond, chamomile and hay, with some heft and noble bitterness on the palate.

Brda, Slovenia

The daughter and father team Maja and Marko Reia make their biodynamically farmed wines from traditional varieties in Brda, Slovenia, just across the border from Friuli in Italy. The winemaking uses traditional techniques like skin-maceration for some of the whites, natural fermentations with no additions other than a little sulfur, and very long aging on lees. This one is all Istrian malvazija, pressed whole bunch into stainless and allowed to ferment and go through malolactic conversion naturally, before two years of lees aging in stainless. The resulting wine has a savoury but very pretty nose of hay and dried white flowers, with nuts and green fig. The palate is fairly full with a nice touch of waxiness, and a nice play between acidity and bitterness that keeps it nice and fresh. Grilled summer vegetables would be great with this, but it coud totally stand up to full-flavoured meaty things as well!
