This is take on Slovenia's traditional skin contact whites, blended from traditional Brda varieties, with nuts, herbs, dried flowers, fruit, and texture to spare.

Brda, Slovenia

The daughter and father team Maja and Marko Reia make their biodynamically farmed wines from traditional varieties in Brda, Slovenia, just across the border from Friuli in Italy. The winemaking uses traditional techniques like skin-maceration for some of the whites, natural fermentations with no additions other than a little sulfur, and very long aging on lees. This wine is a blend of rebula, friulano, and malvazija, with up to two weeks of skin contact, depending on the variety. The wine fermented naturally, then aged in old oak and acacia barrels for nearly three years before bottling with no added sulfur. This has a nicely complex nose of orange, toasted nuts, and something vaguely floral and herby. The palate is a bit waxy and rich, with just the right amount of tannic bite.
