Wildly overachieving 'entry-level' nebbiolo from this excellent culty producer, blended from younger vines in Barolo and Barbaresco.

Langhe Rosso, Italy

Under the leadership of Luca Roagna, this estate is making some of the finest and most sought-after nebbiolo from Barbaresco, plus a bit of excellent Barolo. The style is quite traditional, with natural fermentations, long macerations, and plenty of time in big neutral oak and bottle before release. This Langhe Rosso is all nebbiolo from youngish vines in two of Roagna's best sites: Pira in Barolo and Pajè in Barbaresco. It macerated for about two months, then spent almost three years in large botti barrels and a further two years in cement. This easily compares to top Barabaresco and Barolo from this elegant vintage, with earthy, elegant cherries and flowers, maybe a handful of pipe tobacco, and an old leather baseball mitt. Decant for best results, or stash it away for a few more years!
