Decidedly old-school but approachable Barolo, with super-pretty tobacco, dried fruit, and earth. From a Roagna monopole vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, for you nerds out there.

Barolo, Italy

Under the leadership of Luca Roagna, this estate is making some of the finest and most sought-after nebbiolo from Barbaresco, plus a bit of excellent Barolo. The style is quite traditional, with natural fermentations, long macerations, and plenty of time in big neutral oak and bottle before release. This Barolo macerated for over two months, then spent five years in big old wood and concrete. The wine has complex truffle and stone aromas, with dried strawberry, leather, and herbs. As with Roagna's other wines from 2014, this is relatively approachable if you want to try it out now!
